Current pasture conditions across Nebraska are better than they were earlier this spring, but they are still challenging. Late rains across parts of the state have helped some pastures green up, but green color does not automatically mean grasses have recovered.
For the week ending July 20, 2026, USDA/NASS rated Nebraska pasture and range condition at 35% very poor, 33% poor, 24% fair, 8% good, and 0% excellent. That means about two-thirds of Nebraska pasture and range was still rated poor or very poor, with only 8% rated good.
While this is just a snapshot and conditions vary widely by location, rainfall amount, soil type, pasture species, and grazing history, it is still telling. Pasture condition across the state is not great. Some pastures caught timely moisture and are responding. Others remain short. Across much of the state, producers are still dealing with shorter forage supplies than normal for this time of year.
What We See May Not Match What Is There
With some moisture returning, pasture visual condition does not always match actual forage production. Pastures can look better quickly after a rain. A little green-up can change the appearance from the road, but it may not add many grazing days.
Seedheads can also create a misleading picture. In some cool-season pastures, plants still produced seedheads even though the plants were much shorter than normal and total forage production was reduced. From the road, those seedheads may make a pasture look like it produced more than it actually did. If that forage were clipped, weighed, and compared to a more normal year, the difference would be easier to see.
For pasture management this summer, windshield green is not the same as cow days. Pastures need to be walked. Look at plant height, leaf area, residual forage, bare ground, new regrowth, and how evenly cattle are using the pasture. Rangeland monitoring records are a useful tool to compare and assist with decision making.
Dry Conditions Did Not Start This Spring
This year’s pasture stress did not begin with one dry month. In many areas, dry conditions began last fall, continued through an open and warm winter, and carried into spring. Some locations have dealt with multiple dry falls spanning several years.
That pattern matters, especially for cool-season grasses. Fall moisture helps cool-season plants recover from grazing, rebuild leaf area, and store energy reserves heading into winter. Winter and early spring moisture help set up spring growth. When fall and winter are dry, plants may enter spring already behind. If April and May are also dry, cool-season grasses can miss much of their main production window.
After multiple years of stress, many cool season plants may be running on depleted reserves. Recovery is slowed, growth is weaker, and plant vigor is reduced.
Timing of Rainfall Matters
While rain is always welcome after a dry spell, timing is important. Not all pasture plants grow at the same time. Cool-season grasses make most of their growth during the cooler part of the year, often April, May, and early June. Warm-season grasses generally become more active later, with much of their growth occurring from late June into July and August.
That means late rain can help, but it does not help all pastures in the same way. A late June or early July rain may still support warm-season grass growth on native range. That same rain may help a brome pasture green up, but it may not replace the spring tonnage that was missed.
Wet May-July conditions can help compensate for a dry winter, but it is uncommon for July alone to make up for a dry May and June.
Eastern Nebraska Brome Pastures Are Under Stress
This is especially important for eastern Nebraska pastures built around smooth bromegrass. Brome-centered systems often make a large share of their forage during spring and early summer. If those pastures were stressed last fall, went through a warm/dry winter, and then had a dry spring, they may be both short on forage and low in plant vigor.
Late rains can stimulate brome regrowth, but producers should be cautious about how that regrowth is used. New brome growth can be very palatable and easy to graze off too quickly. In some pastures, the best use of late moisture may be helping plants recover leaf area rather than adding extra grazing days.
Some eastern Nebraska pastures also have limited warm-season grass in the stand. That means they may not have as much ability to shift production into midsummer if the cool-season growth window was missed. Where brome pastures were grazed hard last fall or this spring, producers should watch closely for thin stands, weed pressure, and reduced recovery.
Warm-Season Range Still Has Some Opportunity
Rainfall from late-June through July is important for native range and warm-season dominated pastures. Due to their growth patterns and photosynthetic pathways, Big bluestem, little bluestem, indiangrass, switchgrass, sideoats grama, blue grama, and other warm-season species are better positioned to utilize these summer rains and hot temperatures compared to cool-season grasses which are better suited to growth early and later in the growing season. Understanding your contribution of these different types of plants in your pastures provides valuable context to how timing, amount, and frequency of precipitation might affect forage production.
However, that response is not automatic. Warm-season growth still depends on continued soil moisture, plant vigor, and whether rainfall continues. In mixed native range, the dry spring may reduce the cool-season portion of the forage base and put more pressure on warm-season grasses. Cattle may also chase the newest green regrowth, which can lead to patchy use and overgrazing of preferred areas.
Watch Forbs and Weeds
Stress conditions often open the door for more annual forbs and weeds. When the grass canopy is thin, more light reaches the soil surface, and annual plants may have a greater opportunity to germinate and grow.
Some of that forb response may be temporary and may decline as perennial grasses recover, but producers should keep an eye out for problem species, especially noxious weeds or plants that can affect grazing use. A flush of green forbs may improve pasture appearance, but it should not be confused with full recovery of the perennial grass base.
Grazing Considerations Going Forward
The main management step now is to compare actual forage supply with livestock demand. That means walking pastures, estimating available forage, and asking how many grazing days are truly available.
If plants were already grazed short, late moisture may first go toward restoring leaf area and plant vigor before it produces much usable forage. This is why residual, recovery time, and stocking pressure matter so much following drought stress.
Where regrowth is limited and forage is being consumed faster than expected, consider slowing rotations, increasing recovery time, reducing stocking pressure, or finding additional feed resources. Avoid grazing new regrowth immediately after rain, especially in brome pastures or areas that were grazed short earlier. Stressed pastures will require more rest to return to their previous condition. Maintaining leaf area is what allows plants to keep growing and rebuild vigor.
This is also a year to watch residual closely. Heavy grazing during drought, or immediately after drought-stressed plants begin to regrow, can reduce plant vigor and slow recovery. The combination of heavy grazing and drought is a major driver of range condition decline which can impact pasture production for years.
If the forage budget still comes up short, producers may need to dust off drought plans and be ready to reduce forage demand. That could mean moving cattle, using other forage sources, early weaning, or marketing lower-priority animals. Those decisions are operation-specific and should be based on forage supply, cow condition, feed costs, and market opportunities.
Planning for Recovery
Late rains have helped in 2026, and in some pastures, they may still produce meaningful summer growth. But they are falling on plants that may already be carrying stress from last fall, winter, and a missed spring growth window.
When forage is short, it may be tempting to fully use the grazing available. However, the goal should instead be to manage pastures so plants have enough leaf area and recovery time to respond to the next rain, rebuild vigor going into fall, and maintain or be in better condition for next spring.
