Nebraska Extension hosted a webinar on March 10, 2026, to discuss factors that can influence pregnancy rates in young cows.

The recording of the webinar can be found at https://go.unl.edu/young_cow_pregnancy_rates

Extension Specialists covered the following topics:

  • Heifer Development – Dr. Rick Funston and Dr. Kacie McCarthy
  • Genetic Selection – Dr. Matt Spangler
  • Nutrition for the Cow – Dr. Karla Wilke
  • Infectious Diseases and Infertility – Dr. Brian Vander Ley and Dr. Matt Hille.

This webinar highlighted multiple factors that can contribute to and interact with one another when poor pregnancy rates occur in young cows.

Nebraska Extension is developing a survey for interested cow-calf producers to complete that will provide information that will be helpful in beginning to identify potential herd specific causes. If you would be interested in participating, go to https://go.unl.edu/preg_rate_survey to sign up.

Producers and veterinarians who would like to participate and work with an Extension Specialist team to address this issue are invited to contact Dr. Kacie McCarthy at kacie.mccarthy@unl.edu or at 402-472-6074.
