Summer grazing field day to be held August 5

Inviting those of you interested to a summer grazing field day near Utica, NE on August 5th at 4-6 pm CT.

Uniquely, the grower split a pivot in quarters and rotates between corn, soybean, rye for seed, and cover crops for grazing. He’s trying to find economical ways to run cattle where pasture is limited in the midst of seed corn country. He’s also seeking a system’s approach to reducing inputs, particularly nitrogen inputs, in his system.

  • The current quarter in corn had 2 years of grazing cover crops previously. He assumed 100 lb N credit from the cattle and cover crop impact, but put a nitrogen rate study on it from 0-150 lb N/ac and it’s monitored by Sentinel Fertigation. So far, he’s only applied half the nitrogen in the strips and most aren’t calling for additional N.
  • We’re all very interested in the economics of this rotation as well. Come hear from Alex what he’s doing and his why.

Thank you to the Nebraska Extension On-Farm Research for supplying cookies and water for the field day! Please let Jenny know if you are planning to attend at jrees2@unl.edu .
