For several decades, finished carcass weights have continuously increased, resulting in cull cows that have larger carcass weights than years prior. Selection for growth and milk production has a lasting impact on the cowherd through retained females, often resulting in “stocking rate creep” over time.
Nebraska Extension will offer several in-person workshops along Highway 20 in Northwestern Nebraska with dinner provided onsite.
Topics included:
- Effects of mature weight and milk potential on cow-calf systems
- Examples of stocking rate calculations
- Using Rangeland Analysis Platform to estimate individual ranch forage production
- Discuss changes to plant morphology and future production in response to overgrazing
This program is designed to equip producers with awareness of trends affecting the cowherd and their effects on input costs and productivity and to provide tools to calculate stocking rates on their own operations to promote long-term rangeland health.
