Minimizing Calving Difficulty

The Beef Improvement Federation offers these strategies for easing calving problems.

  • Develop heifers properly so they achieve at least 65% of mature weight before breeding time and 85% by calving time.
  • Breed virgin heifers on heat period before the mature cowherd and give extra attention at calving time.
  • Know the pregnant female's nutrient requirements. Body condition scores should fall with a range of 5 to 6 on a 9-point scale.
  • Consider using the method of feeding at night to promote daylight calving when they can be more closely observed.
  • Know when and how to give assistance or call your vet.
  • Measure pelvic areas of replacements, culling the lower end.
  • Mate virgin heifers to low-risk bulls.
  • Retain daughters of sires that combine low birth-weight EPDs and high maternal calving ease EPDs.
