Sire EPDs for Carcass Traits Were Closely Related to Actual Carcass Performance of Progeny
|
|
Lethbridge Research Centre scientist, D.H. Crews, analyzed data from 273 progeny of 15 Charolais sires to quantify the relationship between carcass EPDs of the sires and actual carcass performance of the progeny. Results of the analysis showed that sire EPD was strongly (P < 0.001) associated with progeny data for hot carcass weight, fat thickness, marbling score, and percent lean yield. The author concluded these results indicate that EPDs of sires for these traits were positively related to progeny outcome at or near theoretical expectations and that selection for carcass merit using appropriate EPDs would be expected to be successful (Crews. 2002. Can. J. Anim. Sci. 82: 503). [September 24th, 2003]
