Protein Supplementation - It's More Than the Impact on the Cow
Resource: Dr. Rick Funston, Asst. Professor of Animal Science, West Central Research & Extension Center (North Platte)
In this session Dr. Rick Funston discusses the impact of supplementing protein to spring calving beef cows on cow performance and the effect on the fetus. Dr. Funston shares the results of his research that supplementation has an impact on the future performance of the fetus. He discusses the impact on future reproductive performance of females offspring. He also has data that indicates a difference in performance of male calves that are retained and harvested. His data suggests that the impact of supplementation on fetal programming is not the same if cows are grazing winter range compared to corn stalk residue during the supplementation period.
