2009-2010 Beef Satellite Short-course
University of Nebraska Extension Educators have planned the 2009-2010 Beef Satellite Short-course titled, "Staying Competitive in an Ever Changing Beef Cattle Industry". Cattle producers are highly encouraged to attend as there will be multiple sessions covering many different topics! Producers will get to see the latest research findings from UNL and will get to determine if utilizing such practices will assist them in their cattle operations.
The Beef Satellite Short Course will have the following topics:
The December 14, 2009 session is entitled, "Protein Supplementation: It’s More Than the Impact on the Cow." The speaker for the evening will be Dr. Rick Funston, Beef Specialist on Beef Cattle Reproduction from the UNL West Central UNL Research Center. Dr. Funston will use some of his recent research findings to discuss what he has found when cows are supplemented the last 90 days of gestation on performance of female and male progeny from those dams. He will discuss this impact for cows grazing winter range and corn stalk residue.
The December 21, 2009 session will cover, "Herd Bio-security – Keeping TB and Trich Out of Your Herd" and will be presented by Dr. Richard Randle, UNL Extension Veterinarian. Dr. Randle has many years of experience of working with producers to design herd health programs to keep the cow herd productive and as disease-free as possible. With production costs on the increase, keeping the herd healthy will increase the profit potential of this enterprise.
On the January 11, 2010 session, Dr. Chris Calkins, UNL Meat Scientist, will be presenting on, "What's the Beef? – Impact on Feeding Distillers On Beef Quality & New Products On the Horizon." Beef producers are in the business of producing an excellent protein source for human consumption. Dr. Calkins will address the impact that feeding strategies might have on eating characteristics and what could be done from a management standpoint to enhance product quality. Dr. Calkins will also address what he sees coming down the pike in regard to new meat products.
During the January 18, 2010 session, the presentation will discuss, "Indexes, SNPs & DNA Testing – Understanding the Complicated Genetics and How It Applies To the Cow/Calf Producer", by Dr. Matt Spangler, UNL Beef Specialist. There seems to be more information in regard to determining the genetic make-up of beef cattle. Dr. Spangler will discuss the usefullness of this information in making informed decisions about bull selection so that you can more readily move the genetics of your herd in your desired direction.
