Last week (9-21) I lost 3 healthy cows. Two died the same day both were in the 3rd stage and the calves were aborted or premature laying beside the cow. The 3rd cow had an 8 day old with her, calf is OK. I believe the deaths are Acorn related, all were 6 yrs old and very healthy. Can you reccommend any additive or suggest another possible cause? All pastures contain some Oak Trees.

I have been taught that it is important to feed cows protein in the winter so they better utilize roughage. Does that protein have to be fed every day? i.e. can I feed them alfalfa every second or third day? How about once a week?

Due to economic downturn I have had to sell my small cow herd. Formerly we took in cattle and had a few of our own. Now my income will be solely rent. I have about 3000 acres unused pasture in Blaine county and am thinking of doing some fall rent. What would a fair range be to charge someone who is wanting to run 1400 lb cows with calves weaned off for 2 months, Nov. and Dec.? The summer rates in our area were 37 to 42 for cow-calf pairs.

Could you direct me to a site that tells the average of cattle loss per year due to weather, sickness, storms etc? Or basically what one could expect of a certain percentage of loss on a normal working farm?

If I stockpile pasture since mid to late August, will I affect the re-growth next spring if I let stockers eat the pasture down in the winter; or will the roots still be in good shape? What care do I need to take to protect the pasture for next spring? Thanks for your help.
