Is it possible to put too much nitrogen on a pasture and then have cattle grazing it? I recieved a question from a customer who has an irrigated pasture that is grazed in sections. They put 35 lbs N on 3 weeks ago another 35 lbs went on this week and would like to put another 35 lbs on yet. Would this cause as nitrate accumulation problem for the cattle?

Heavy fall grazing weakens plants as they go into winter and therefore they grow less vigorously in the spring. Does heavy winter grazing have the same impact on plants?

I have access to free soybean meal (48% protein)and would like to be able to use it as a protein supplement for my cows on summer pasture. What are your suggestions on feeding it? I was told about a pound a day is adequate but how do you limit them to that? I could throw it out to them daily but it's such a small amout I think some could easily get too much while others get none. Can something be added to make it self limiting so I can put out several days at once?

We had wheat under part of a pivot. I took the wheat off for grain spread manure and planted rye for grazing and maybe hay. Next spring I would like to plant it back to a hay crop. I was thinking of an alfalfa grass mix using alfalfa, reed canary grass, and maybe some orchard grass. I didn't know what rates to plant. My goal is to hay this twice a year about the middle of June and the first of August and maybe graze what regrows in October. Some people have told me that I can't grow canary grass on hills so I am asking for your imput?
