I live in an area where we have quite severe winters with lot of snow. So to graze all year is not an option. I am trying to reduce winter feed cost as much as possible. We have plenty of straw available along with corn stalks that we can feed. How can I utilize these lower cost feeds and yet still meet the nutritional requirements of the cows?

Could you tell me what characteristics a calf from a registered Brangus bull crossed with a registered Brahman cow. And also the other way around. We are thinking of consolidating our two herds and keeping the better bull.

I am wanting to add a clay soil over a sandy loam base in my feedyard pens. The contractor suggested a red clay rather than a yellow clay for the reason that water does not penetrate as easily. Is this true? Or is there a more suitable soil to put in my yards that will not be dug up by the cattle as easily and will still keep a base.
