Frequently Asked Questions
The cost of hay in my area-central Minn, is expected to reach near 70 dollars for a 1200 lb bale. Being a little short on hay, I was wondering if it would be wise to try and supplement corn silage into the bred cows diet. I have a few dairy farmers in my area and could possibly buy silage for a fair price. The cows begin calving the first part of March. Would this change in the diet have any adverse affects?

There seems to be a large difference between wet gluten and modified wet distillers. We have access to both products but trucking would be much more for the distillers. I can figure the tranportation part out. How do we properly compare the wet gluten feed with MWDGS when using either for energy source to supplement poor quality hay during last trimester for cows. If both are priced by the ton, how do we compare then? What would be the breakeven price between them?

My March calving cows have been grazing corn stalks. Because of the snow cover, they no longer show kernals in the manure. When the snow melts, will the rumen bacteria that digests grain still be active, one month later?

I have a group of heifers going to calve (1100 lbs). We normally feed cornstalks and alfalfa and corn syrup to our cows. How much syrup can I feed?

As I figure rations, which item should I be more concerned with, TDN or Nem? Seem to be able to make TDN for last trimester, but am having trouble balancing Nem without going overboard on TDN and CP. The daily feed guidlines that I have show 1400# cow needing 14.9 TDN and 25.1 Nem last trimester. Do you agree on these numbers or do you have different percentages.

What could be wrong we have some cows slipping or not breeding right. One has been with 2 differ bulls and still isn't bred. We feed protein and mineral plus soybean pellets 1-2 times a week.

I feed Holstein steers. I get them as new babies and feed to finished wt. I want to start an implant program to improve efficiency. There are so many options it gets confusing. If you could help me with what to use and when I would appreciate it.

Does the size of the cow have much effect on the gestation period for the cow? Does a larger breed have to carry a calf longer than a smaller breed?
