Frequently Asked Questions
I am wanting to plant some oats into a picked down hay meadow (mix of fescue and prarie) to graze some of our weaned calves this early spring. Can you give me some suggestions on how/when/what variety to plant as well as how/when to graze it? Are there any publications that we could read to help us learn more? Our thoughts were to no-till it in mid February and begin grazing mid-March but we have never done this before.

How much nutrition would be lost from hay stored for year? Specifically net wrapped round bales of brome stored under a tarp. Hay prices are down considerably after last years drought so I wondered about buying some of next winters now.

We just untarped our Sudan Grass Hay and some of it is moldy. Will that cause bred cows to abort? Or are there any other health risks to feeding it?

Cow herd is losing condition due to cold weather and snow/ice covering cornstalks. Feeding 25-30 pounds of ground alfalfa per day as well as 27% protein tubs. Cows are picking through the snow, but I'm sure they are not getting much. I have some whole corn in the bin I could supplement with. How many pounds/hd/day should I feed to help bring back condition? Is 2 lbs enough?

Would like to apply my fertilizer blend of 11-52-00 and 46-0-0 in February on pasture and grass hay ground. Thinking the snow would melt it in when it warms up. Any ideas on this would be helpful.

I was just wondering what would be the best breed of beef cattle for our state (WV)? I was thinking either Angus or Hereford but I want to know what you think.

I am going to convert a cultivated field into coastal grass for hay and grazing. The bids I have been receiving to sprig the field are confusing. How many "bushels" are in a "square bale?"
