Frequently Asked Questions
I have approx. 275 ton of grass and alfalfa hay to feed my cows this winter. I'm looking at buying 250 ton of Millet hay. My question is do I need to watch for nitrates and would you feed the hays every other day? If it's high in nitrates, what do I do?

What can be planted following winter wheat for "safe" grazing starting about the middle of September? Sorghums and sudangrasses have the prussic acid issue and after some research pearl millets shouldn't be grazed following a hard freeze. Turnips could work, but might not be ready by mid-September. Land is under a center pivot in western Nebraska.

How much butchered meat should you expect from a 1000 lb. beef cow? Is there a percentage of waste to factor in to the finished product? Should you get let's say 40% of the total weight in proccessed meat from the butcher or 60%?

Could you feed a small amount of corn screening like 2#/hd/da to get calves started on feed? The green cattle we get in will sort out the cracked corn, they can't do this so easy with fine corn. We also feed 2#'s of stress pellets along with hay. We're feeding 52 Mcal ration to start out.

We have a fall calving herd and have them on irrigated pasture since April. We seem to be having alot of problems with big calves and having to pull alot. Could the irrigated pasture be the problem? We also have cows that are good milkers in the past with no milk this year. Any sugestions are appreciated.

We are wondering if there is a recommendation for the number of acres needed to graze cow/calf pairs? We have about 20 acres of pasture, two miles south of Randolph (Wayne County). The pasture has a good stand of grass that we have split into 3 (approx. 7 acre each) sections which we rotationally graze. We are wondering how many pairs we can graze in this pasture?
