We have 3 herds of cows calving Mar-May/June-July/Aug. What is the feasibility of wet DDGs in our program? We typically background weaned calves after creep on a self-fed fishmeal/corn ration to 8-900# w/prarie hay free choice. We feed cows ground hay or bales (alf/sudex/stalks/CRP) during Mar-Apr after they come off stalks. Can we feed a mixture of DDG's + forage (straw/sudex/CRP) for cows and/or weaned calves from a tub-ground loose pile (calves Nov-Apr, cows Mar-Apr) and get rid of the alf/corn $s? I would prefer to feed from a pile with hot wire. I also need to supplement lactating cows on stalks. How do DDGs fit into that? They are usually a long distance from my farm when on stalks. If so, what would the ration look like for each and what supplements and challenges would we have with each? How long could the piles stay in condition? Could we get even distribution with the DDGs in the pile?

I currently have 160 acres across the road from an 80 I recently bought. 100 acres of the 1/4 are mostly warm season grass w/some cheat + brome. The 80 is all grass of the above species. I am in an EQUIP program to crossfence the 80 to 3 paddocks-plant the 50 acres of farmland in the 1/4 to grass and crossfence that farmland into 4 paddocks + the adjoining 100 acres in the 1/4 that are currently grass into 3 paddocks. There is a well on the 80 that will provide fresh water for the whole system with 3 2600 gallon tanks. What type of grass should I plant the farmland to? I want the most productivity for the grazing season. If I plant cool grass can I get much more grazing from it other than Spring if I go to stalks in October? I plan on planting it all to warm grass & having 3 herds of 20 cows each on the 160 acres + 80 acres. Each will have 3 paddocks to graze. I am in Thayer County. What do you advise?

We bought Angus heifers that averaged 378 lbs. in May 15 2007. They have been on grass all summer. We want to feed them out for beef, using DDGS. What do we start them with (cracked corn, protein pellets, DDGS)? About how long would it take to finish these heifers out?

Does by-pass protein still work to help the digestibility of roughage in beef animals if the protein (cotton seed meal) is diluted by salt (as self feed supplement) to where the total ration is at 18% protein?

My home grown beef was taken to a different butcher shop this time. When we got it back the next Saturday it was not yet frozen in the air tight packages. I have tried several different cuts and they all seem to be tough!! Why? I am even thinking that maybe the meat was not mine, because even the T-bones are tough and Ive NEVER had a tough T-bone before. My beef was just over 2 years old and weighed about 700 per half. Is there anything I can do? What if I age it before I cook it? Maybe a day or so in the frig. Any suggestions would be helpful. Please no recipies for marinade.
