Sorry for asking you this question, as I am not a NE farmer but you seem to be a wealth of info. Can you point me to any research that would support calving a first calf heifer at 30 mos as opposed to 24 mos. While I am certain this is not a popular belief, I am starting to believe as an industry we may serve ourselves by doing so.

I have a question about % dry matter intake? My question is if my forage is 60% moisture and 40 % dry matter and my cow are weighing around 1200 ibs. then how much actual forage on an as fed basis do they need to eat to get around 2.0-2.5% of their body weight in dry matter? Do they not need as much during this time of year if the nutrient content is high? When a cow needs 24 pounds of dry matter is that the amount ingested on as fed or amount with moisture taken out? With my calculations if they are right my cows would have to eat 60 pounds of forage on an as fed basis to get 24 pounds of dry matter intke.
