I have 70 acres that was planted in oats in October. We have decided to sprig with coastal in April. Can I purchase 400-500 pound calves and put on the oats for 2 months without harm to the calves? Will they gain enough to make it worthwhile?

I own 110 acres of land in Ga. and am interested in raising cattle on this property. I do not have any experience in raising cattle and wondered if there are any farm co-ops or farming companies that I may join to get expert assistance in starting raising cattle? The property is located in Wheeler County.

I have 2000 weaned calves that have been range and cake fed since weaning in September. I want to get them in better condition with the recent weather and continue a simple ration to spring turnout. I have several thousand tons of ground soybean stubble and am currently feeding WDGS from Sutherland. I am wondering if these two products will give me a 1.2lb/d gain and at what levels may I feed these products. I would like to avoid feeding any corn and would consider soy hull pellets, however I did not contract any this past summer not realizing what corn would do. I keep these cattle all natural. I was also wandering if there would be any toxicity levels found with feeding thes two products. Also, would like info about feeding these products third trimester as cows come home from stalks.

Our county fair is planning on using ultrasound to determine if a steer will grade or not, is this good, where can I find out how accurate it is, and is this of value to the buyer (it is a slaughter show) or just a way to elimate animals from the show? What is the best method to get an accurate reading? What I have read makes me think that this does not predict whether the animal will be good to eat-fat-or not? Please guide me in giving these people some valuable info on the use of this method, and is it an immediate result? as this is how they plan to use it to determine whether a youngster who has fed a steer all year is allowed to show at the fair or kicked out of the fair.

I use molasses tubs to supplement the cattle during dry periods. I prefer to feed all natural products with no urea in the molasses. I have lost a cow, years past, from over consuming a block which had urea. My question and concern is urea essential in molasses feed to help control consumption or should I avoid feed products that are fed free choice that contain urea? I am trying to decide whether to feed molasses tubs with or without urea. I do have adequate dry grass and forage at this time. Am I too concerned over the use of urea in cattle feed?

Do I need shelter for? I live in MN and most people have a little something but I don't want to put up a barn. They would be young calves when we get them about 100 or so lbs.

Are breech births genetic or related to nutrition. I have a cow that has had 2 breeches out of 3 births and lost 2 of the calves.
