Frequently Asked Questions

Q:   We just started using some of the wet byproducts we are uncertain how to mix should we take in consideration the moster example we are feeding 1800 lb of good qaulity grass hay to 1800 lb of wetcorn bran we think that's 1:1 ratio of hay to wet corn bran.

A:   Corn bran and corn steep liquor are the main byproducts of corn sweetener and ethanol production and are the two major ingredients blended to produce wet corn gluten feed. Previous research has shown that wet corn byproducts are equal to or higher in energy than corn grain. The higher energy value of the byproducts has the potential to increase efficiency. The steep is added back at different levels depending on the plant. The moisture content should be available at the plant. So a key here is to know the moisture content of both feeds. In you case, the wet corn bran is wetter than the hay and you need to account for the difference in water content.

The easiest way to get a handle on this is to convert both feeds to 100% dry matter basis. Let's assume that the hay is 85% dry matter (15% water) and the wet corn bran is 50% dry matter (50% water). So in the 1800 lb of hay, then there is 1530 (1800 x .85) of hay in the mix on a dry matter basis. The 1800 lb of wet corn bran is really 900 lb (1800 x .50) on a dry matter basis. The ratio is 1.7:1 hay to wet corn bran.
