Q: We are currently finishing our steers on corn silage and roasted soybean meal with good results. With the price of soybeans going up, can we cut back on soybeans and add whiskey distillers to cut costs? Or is there another alternative?

A: Distillers grains from whiskey or fuel ethanol production can be used to feed livestock. I am assuming that the grain used by the whiskey distillery is corn, is that correct? In general, the optimum inclusion rate for improved gain and feed efficiency of cattle fed corn wet distiller’s grains is between 15% and 30% of the diet dry matter. Therefore, you could replace the roasted soybean meal with the distillers grains up to 30% of the diet (on a dry basis).
