Frequently Asked Questions

Q:   If I have a pasture that is rated at 10 AUMs/acre, how may pounds or tons per acre does that equate to if cut for hay?

A:   AUM is animal unit month and AUM is defined as a 1,000 pound cow with a 3 to 4 month old calf at her side. This equates to 26 lb/da intake of cow and calf dry matter basis. So 26 lb of forage times 30 days = 780 lb forage dry matter basis per AUM. 10 AUM ac x 780 lb/AUM 7,800 lb per acre dry matter. If harvested as hay that is 12% moisture and 88% dry matter that would calcualte to 8,864 lb of hay at 12% moisture. That would be 4.4 ton per acre air dried to 88% dry matter.
