Frequently Asked Questions

Q:   I'd like to know if I can raise Brahman cattle in this part of the country (Iowa)? My main concern is the severe cold temperatures and the long winters. Will they adapt to the cold weather?

A:   The Brahman breed is noted for their ability to handle extreme heat as compared to other breeds such as British or Continental cattle. The extreme cold temperatures are a concern for purebred Brahman cattle and it is likely that in extremely cold weather performance would decline and their would be the potential for increased mortality of the cattle are not already adapted to your environment and if they are not provided with additional shelter. If your marketing goals require Brahman genetics I would consider two possibilities:

1) Use Brahman derivative breeds such as Brangus, Braford, or Santa Gertrudis for example.

2) Select animals from an environment similar to yours. This is always good advice regardless of breed or climate since it is reasonable to assume that there is a genetic component to adaptation. Although we do not have a genetic predictor for this like an EPD (expected progeny difference)you could select animals from another herd that is already adapted to cold climates.
