Frequently Asked Questions

Q:   What is the average shrink on corn silage pile that is tarped with a cement base and dirt walls? The pile will be about 250 tons.

A:   This is not an easy question to answer - - it depends. The literature suggests that the range in shrink for corn silage in the bunker is 6% to 18%. The variation depends a lot on harvest conditions and packing conditions. A dense, solid pack will result in less losses to shrink. In your situation, where you have a concrete base and dirt sides and you are covering the silage when finished, if you get a dense pack, shrink would be in the lower range (6% to 10% shrink).
