Q: We have a pregnant cow that has been down for 3 days. We thought it might have grass tetany. We have poked a hole in her and air and some foamy stuff came out, we have given her the medication orally and through IV and given her a shot of antibiotics. When we did the IV she had a bowel movement and burping. She is alert and looks good. Is it possible that her calf is laying on a nerve?

A: It could be grass tetany, but if not treated as such, the cow would haved died. We do see some winter tetany, but not often, but the treatment is the same. The calf could be pinching a nerve causing the cow to go down, but this is not seen very often. Did the cow injure herself by falling on ice or something like that. If she was bloated, then releaving the gas was the right thing to do. Sometimes when cows are down, they can not eructate properly to get rid of gas. If you do not see improvement in 3 or so days, call your veterinarain. If you observe a change for the worse, call your veterinarian. In the meantime, give her plenty of hay, water, and some grain to get her strength back.
