Frequently Asked Questions

Q:   We have raised cattle at this location for 50 years. Late last summer was the first time ever we got foot rot in the herd. It went through the whole herd of adult cattle for about 4 months. Only several had it at one time. Some of the individuals got it 2 or 3 times. We think they got it from some mud holes in the creek they stand in to relieve the heat and fight flies. What would have caused that last year?

A:   Hard to tell what triggered the footrot this year compared to years past. Sometime in drought conditions, the hoof gets really dry and causes small cracks. This allows for an avenue to let organisms penetrate the hoof with the result being footrot. The hope is that this isn't a yearly problem and will likely not be as you have grazed this area before without problems.
