Frequently Asked Questions

Q:   We have a cow who calved two days ago (her second calf) and her udder and teats are so swollen and hard that calf cannot nurse and trying to insert a syringe made for that purpose was unsuccessful and now the cow won't let us get near her udder - what do we do?

A:   Make sure the calf received colostrum within 12 hours after birth. You may need to milk the cow out. Also, you may want to call your vet as there may be some mastitis that has set in.

I don't tolerate poor teats and udders, so this female would be on my cull list for next fall.
