Q: I am going to convert a cultivated field into coastal grass for hay and grazing. The bids I have been receiving to sprig the field are confusing. How many "bushels" are in a "square bale?"

A: Normally the common standard for bermudagrass sprigs is bushels and 1 bushel contains about 1000 sprigs. You might ask the dealer for their definition of a bale. The only case I know of where the term bales might be used is when topgrowth that is has about 6 weeks of growth is cut, baled fresh, and them immediately spread on a field for propagation. This can work for a few types of bermudagrass. Planting fresh sprigs that have had minimal drying is important to a rapid stand establisment.
