Frequently Asked Questions

Q:   I was just wondering what would be the best breed of beef cattle for our state (WV)? I was thinking either Angus or Hereford but I want to know what you think.

A:   Instead of asking, what is the best breed of cattle, ask what are my goals and objectives for the cow herd. Once you have determined that, will you develop a commercial cow herd or seedstock herd. If it is a commercial herd, then determine what cross-bred cow will best fit what you are trying to do. Match cow size and milk production with the feed resources that you have available. As milk production and cow size increase, so will nutrient needs. Also you can graze more moderate sized cows compared to large cows on the same pasture base. I would also suggest that you contact your extension office as they will have recsources for you to read and will know of producers that you might want to visit with.
