Frequently Asked Questions

Q:   Cow herd is losing condition due to cold weather and snow/ice covering cornstalks. Feeding 25-30 pounds of ground alfalfa per day as well as 27% protein tubs. Cows are picking through the snow, but I'm sure they are not getting much. I have some whole corn in the bin I could supplement with. How many pounds/hd/day should I feed to help bring back condition? Is 2 lbs enough?

A:   This winter has been rough on beef cows and the stalk fields in some areas are covered with snow and ice, so not much grazing from them. If your cows weigh 1200 to 1250, the amount of alfalfa you a offering is pretty close to meeting their intake needs. If they are in mid to late gestation, then you are likely meeting both their protein and energy needs, but that depends on the quality of the alfalfa. Even if it is medium quality, you are likely meeting the needs. The protein tub is costing you and really adding nothing to the diet. If you still need to pick up condition, you could feed whole corn, 2 to 4 lb/hd/da and then maybe carry that to after calving and feed 3 lb/hd/da especially to the young cows. You will not pick up condition after calving. It is difficult beause cows are lactating. You just don't want to drop any condition. Make sure you have plenty of bunk-space, or if you feed the corn on the ground, spread it out enough so that all can eat their share. Have water and salt and mineral available.
