Frequently Asked Questions

Q:   I would like to start feeding ddgs to supplement my cows on stalks, what would be a recomended rate, note I have two groups fall calvers with 200 lb calves at side and spring calvers that will calve April 1st.

A:   Dry distillers grains are a good energy and protein source. If the April calvers are a little thin, then I would suggest about 2 to 3 lb/hd/da of DDGS. Make sure all cows have their fair share to the supplement and that the boss cow doesn't get it all. You will not need to supplement phosphorus, so look for a by-product mineral block that does not contain any P. If they are in good shape, I'd hold off for a while.

The fall calvers on stalks with calves at their side are deficient in both energy and protein. If they are getting nothing but stalks, then I would work them up to 5 lb/hd/da of DDGS. Again, make sure they all have access to their share of the distillers and that no one cows over-consumes. P is not needed and look for a by-product mineral block that contains no P. What condition on the lactating cows. I would not recommend feeding over 7 lb/hd/da DDGS.
