Frequently Asked Questions

Q:   What would be the maximum amount of beet tailings that could be included in a beef cow's diet. these tailings are clean and ground. The calves were weaned from the cows about two weeks ago. Other feeds can include baled corn stalks, hay, and corn silage. The tailings are cheap and I would like to conserve as much of the other feeds as possible. Feeding about 55 head.

A:   I don't have a lot of experience feeding beeet tailings to beef cows. Following is an excellent resource for you to read http://www.extension.umn.edu/beef/components/pdfs/UseOfByproductsToMeetNutritionalNeeds.pdf. The tailings are used as an energy source for beef cows, but their nutrient composition can be variable.
