Q: Have you heard of cattle (replacement heifers) refusing to eat BT corn and stubble? Heifers have been on corn stalks approximately two weeks with adequate salt, mineral, and water. They are grubbing down all the grass on the field margins and getting gaunt.

A: We have completed research using cattle grazing Bt and non-Bt corn residue fields and saw no difference in cow performance and calf performance. The calves were weaned calves in the fall. What I think is going on in your situation is that stalk grazing is new to these calves and they a use to eating grass and that's what they are doing. Calves in our stalk grazing experiments will graze the fence-line and ultimately begin consuming the residue in the field. What you might consider is putting a cow that is an experienced corn stalk grazer with the calves and she can show the calves how to graze the stalks.
