Frequently Asked Questions

Q:   Are there any studies that evaluate the optimal inclusion rate of MODIFIED Wet Distillers Grains and Solubles (45% DM)?

A:   This is a tough question to answer because, it depends. The best F:G was observed at 50% inclusion, but the best ADG was at 20 to 30% inclusion. The best economically was between 20 to 40% depending on distance from the ethanol plant and price relative to corn. All these percentages are on a dry matter basis. It is quite complex. Our 2008 Nebraska Beef Report should be out soon and there is an article by Taia Huls where she fed modified distillers grains at 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50% (all on DM basis, which is critical to note). She generated response curves for DMI, ADG, and F:G. She has also written an economics paper in the 2008 beef report to address that question using the cattle CODE software that is on our beef website beef.unl.edu.
