Q: I am having trouble with getting enough hay each year. I was thinking of trying birdsfoot trefoil as a main source of hay. What are the pros and cons to this type of hay?
|
|
A: Birdsfoot trefoil hay is generally similar to alfalfa in most all nutritional characteristics. For beef cows, feeding strictly birdsfoot trefoil hay would likely result in exceeding animal requirements for many nutrients. A better plan might include feeding some grass hay and trefoil hay. Obtaining a quality test on the hays would allow one to determine the ideal amounts of each hay or any other feed type that might be used. If you plan on producing the birdfoot trefoil hay yourself, be aware that it does not have the production ability of alfalfa; and in some cases, stand persistence is reduced when it is routinely cut for hay.
