Frequently Asked Questions

Q:   We bought a young Hereford calf from auction. He eats and drinks good but seems to be bloated. What can I do for the bloating?

A:   Some cattle are chronic bloaters and that's why they are sold, so you may have purchased someone else's problem. Cattle bloat because they ferment feeds and therfore produce gas. They would get rid of the gas by eructation and if they can not do this they bloat. Some feeds when consumed produce a froth and this traps the gas in the rumen. Some feeds are ground to fine and they are digested to fast and cause bloat. So make sure feeds that are fed are coursely ground. You nmay want to contact your vet for other ideas. You could feed a free-choice block called Bloat Guard. Most feed stores have the the block and this will help. It is free-choice, so the heifer will have to consume the product or it will not help. If you have a pasture that does not have a lot of legumes like alfalfa in it, concider moving the heifer to graze that pasture. Sometimes it may be worth it to cull and chronic bloater from you herd.
