Frequently Asked Questions

Q:   What is the estimated feed conversion on a holstein steer fed full feed of ground ear corn with commercial supplement making a 14% ration? No forage is provided. These cattle will be fed from about 500# to 1200-1300# in a dry lot situation. How much ear corn per animal will it take in your opinion?

A:   These cattle will usually average 2.70 to 3.00 lb/day and consume 21 to 24 lbs of feed on a dry matter basis. Feed converison will be between 7.5 and 8.5 lbs of feed /lb of gain. This will require about 6400 lbs of ear corn on a dry matter basis or 7500 lb or a 15% moisture basis. Implanting cattle will improve gain and efficiency 5 to 10%.
