Q:   My question is the amount of cattle population per state? Also why is it so difficult to find out this info?

A:   These numbers for one year are published usually in March or April of the next year. So cow inventory for 2003 will usually be available in March or April of the following year. Cattle marketing information groups like Cattle Fax publish these numbers to their members. NCBA publishes these numbers in their summer issue. Usually the State Ag Statistics Services has these numbers.

Total Cattle (includes dairy cattle)

  • 1. Texas - 14 million head
  • 2. Kansas - 6.35 million
  • 3. Nebraska - 6.2 million
  • 4. Oklahoma - 5.4 million
  • 5. California - 5.25 million
Beef Cows
  • 1. Texas - 5.489 million head
  • 2. Missoouri - 2.116 million
  • 3. Oklahoma - 2.042 million
  • 4. Nebraska - 1.934 million
  • 5. South Dakota - 1.686 million
Cattle on Feed
  • 1. Texas - 2.640 million head
  • 2. Nebraska - 2.260 million
  • 3. Kansas - 2.240 million
  • 4. Colorado - 1.040 million
  • 5. Iowa - 0.980 million
